Department Philosophy
Medical Radiography and Radiological Sciences, which deals with the use of ionizing radiation (including X-rays) and other forms of radiant energy in the diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases, is an indispensable arm of modern medical sciences and the pivot of modern diagnostic medicine. The department believes that the great rapid scientific and technological advances and progress of the past few decades especially in medical and radiological sciences and technology can only be fully and effectively harnessed for optimum practical application and utilization with enhanced university level educational training.
High level scientific training is a major pre-requisite for proper understanding and efficient application of the sophisticated technology in this field of learning.
Objectives
This programme is designed to attain the following objectives.
- To train radiographers and radiological scientists with sufficient and relevant scientific and technological skills with high degree of competence and safety in the practice of radiography at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels of health-care delivery.
- To train radiographers and radiological scientists with sufficient interpersonal and inter-disciplinary skills to function as members of the health care team.
- To empower radiographers and radiological scientists with proficiency to carry out research, manage materials and human resources, and also acquire adequate techniques and skills to fabricate components.
Scope
The programme includes the following: Diagnostic Radiography, Medical Ultrasound Imaging, Radiotherapy and Oncology, Nuclear Medicine Sciences, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Medical Radiological Physics, Radiation Protection/Radiobiology, Radiographic Imaging Processes, Radiological Instrumentation, Radiology Administration and Management, and Radiological Education.
The course of training normally extends over a period of five academic sessions (10 semesters). The period of training is divided into three stages.; One year of preliminary basic science studies, one year of preclinical studies in basic Medical Sciences/applied sciences and three years of clinical exposure at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) and other approved centres. The clinical exposure is taken together with the professional courses.

There are abundant job opportunities for graduate Medical Radiographers in teaching hospitals, general hospitals, industries and the Armed Forces. There are also academic opportunities in institutions of higher learning for teaching, research and development.
